The past few years have been unkind to Ray Borg. And now he no longer has an MMA contract on top of it all.
The UFC has released Borg, a former title challenger, promotion officials confirmed Friday with ESPN. The news was first reported by MMA Fighting. A request for comment from Borg’s team was not immediately returned.
Last week, Borg withdrew from a UFC bout with Nate Maness on the day of weigh-ins for undisclosed reasons. It was the second straight time he had arrived at a fight week without having competed. Borg pulled out of a scheduled June 13 bout with Merab Dvalishvili due to personal reasons. In total, Borg has withdrawn from nine total UFC bouts that were booked. He also missed weight on four separate occasions.
Some of those withdrawals were injuries or weight cuts gone awry, but Borg has also had some personal issues. His son, Anthony, was born with the brain affliction hydrocephalus in 2018 and has required several surgeries.
Borg (13-5) was long a promising flyweight and bantamweight for the UFC. He fought and lost to Demetrious Johnson in a flyweight title fight at UFC 216 in 2017 and had several impressive wins. Borg, 27, was on a two-fight winning streak going into a bout with Ricky Simon in May that Borg lost by split decision.
