The rematch that was eight years in the making is now official.
Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez and Juan Francisco Estrada will meet on March 13 in a title unification fight, Matchroom Boxing announced on Saturday night. Gonzalez owns the WBA belt in the 115-pound division and Estrada holds the WBC title in that weight class.
In their first meeting in 2012, Gonzalez won a majority decision over Estrada for the WBA flyweight title.
The victory came during a run in which Gonzalez (50-2, 41 KOs) was considered one of the best fighters in boxing. Now, Estrada (41-3, 28 KOs) is the one ranked among the sport’s elite. He is ranked No. 9 on ESPN’s pound-for-pound list.
Estrada came off the canvas to pick up an 11th-round stoppage over Carlos Cuadras on Oct. 23. In the top undercard fight on that same event, Gonzalez beat Israel Gonzalez in a title defense.
All three combined losses between Roman Gonzalez and Estrada came against Wisaksil Wangek. Estrada avenged his 2018 loss with a victory over Wangek in 2019.
No venue has been announced for the bout, Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn said in a release.
