The Chicago Cubs released right-hander Jake Arrieta on Thursday, ending his second stint with the franchise.
Arrieta pitched on Wednesday night, allowing 11 hits and eight runs (seven in the first inning alone) in four innings of the Cubs’ 10-0 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers to fall to 5-11 with a 6.88 ERA this season. Arrieta dropped his seventh straight decision and since his last win on May 25 he has a 9.92 ERA in 11 starts.
He returned to the Cubs this season with a one-year deal after spending the past three seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies.
Arrieta, 35, starred for the Cubs from 2013 to 2017, winning a Cy Young Award in the 2015 season and helping the team to three playoff appearances and a World Series championship in 2016. In the 2015 and 2016 seasons, he threw two no-hitters and won 40 games.
Arrieta signed a three-year deal with Philadelphia before the 2018 season, but injuries marred his tenure there.
He is 115-90 with a 3.93 ERA in 12 major league seasons.
The Cubs also placed starting catcher Willson Contreras on the 10-day injured list Thursday with a sprained right knee.
