Iowa wide receiver Kaleb Brown, a starter for part of last season, was arrested early Sunday for operating while under the influence and possession of fictitious identification.
Brown, 20, is a transfer from Ohio State who started four games last season for the Hawkeyes, recording 22 receptions for 215 yards and a touchdown. At 2:25 a.m. Sunday, Iowa City police observed Brown driving near his home in Iowa City with significant front-end damage to his vehicle, including a wheel turned completely sideways.
According to police, Brown backed his vehicle onto a lawn and began spinning the tires before being stopped. They observed “bloodshot watery eyes, slurred speech, poor balance” and alcohol odor on his body.
Brown refused field sobriety tests and breath tests and was taken into custody on the OWI charge, a serious misdemeanor. A police report stated he also was found to have a fake driver’s license that showed his age as being over 21.
Iowa acknowledged Brown’s arrest Monday, saying in a news release that he’s subject to the school’s student-athlete code of conduct, as well as team disciplinary policies.
The Hawkeyes open the season Aug. 31 against Illinois State.
