Padres’ Cease throws no-hitter against Nationals

MLB

Dylan Cease threw a no-hitter Thursday against the Nationals, becoming the second pitcher in Padres history to achieve the feat.

Cease completed the no-hitter on CJ Abrams‘ lineout to right field. The hard-throwing right-hander walked three and struck out nine on a season-high 114 pitches.

The only other Padres pitcher to record a no-hitter is Joe Musgrove, who shut down the Rangers on April 9, 2021.

Cease allowed only three baserunners Thursday; Lane Thomas walked with one out in the first inning and was caught stealing, then reached on another walk in the fourth but was erased on Jesse Winker’s double-play grounder. Abrams walked leading off the seventh and was stranded at second base.

Cease entered with two complete games in 144 big league starts, both shutouts: a seven-inning three-hitter against Detroit on April 29, 2021, and a nine-inning one-hitter vs. Minnesota on Sept. 3, 2022, in which Luis Arraez lined a single to right-center with two outs in the ninth inning.
