Wemby hits another milestone with 50-point game

NBA

SAN ANTONIO — Call it a week of milestones for San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama, who followed up his first 30-point game of the season Monday by scoring a career-high 50 points Wednesday night in a 139-130 win over the Washington Wizards.

Prior to Wednesday, the last three 50-point games produced by Spurs came in overtime games. David Robinson in 1994 logged the franchise’s last 50-point outing in regulation.

At 20 years and 314 days old, Wembanyama is the fourth-youngest player in NBA history to record a 50-point game. At 7-foot-4, he’s also the tallest to do so.

For his career, Wembanyama has now recorded a 50-point game, a 5×5 game and a 10-block game. Just three other players — Anthony Davis, Hakeem Olajuwon and Robinson — have accomplished all of that in a career since blocks became official in 1973-74.

Wembanyama is the second player with a 50-point game this season, following Orlando‘s Paolo Banchero on Oct. 28. This marks the first season in NBA history that a pair of players age 21 or younger scored 50 points in a game (Banchero turned 22 Tuesday).

The only other season of multiple 50-point games by a player age 21 or younger came in 2005-06, as LeBron James reached the milestone twice at the age of 20.

Wembanyama shot 18-of-29 against the Wizards and hit 8 of 16 from deep. He also collected 6 rebounds and 3 blocks in 32 minutes.

In his last three games, Wembanyama has made 20 3-pointers and totaled 13 blocks, the first player in NBA history to reach those numbers in a three-game span.
