Oliveira storms back, stops Chandler to win title

MMA

Charles Oliveira defeated Michael Chandler by TKO in the second round to win the vacant lightweight title Saturday night in the main event of UFC 262 at Toyota Center.

The stoppage came at 19 seconds of Round 2.

Oliveira becomes the first UFC lightweight champ who isn’t Khabib Nurmagomedov since Conor McGregor was stripped of the title in 2018 due to inactivity. Nurmagomedov retired earlier this year, relinquishing the title.

Oliveira (31-8, 1 NC), who earned his first title shot after being in the UFC since 2010, won his ninth straight fight.

Chandler (22-6) had his three-fight winning streak snapped. He came in off a first-round TKO win over Dan Hooker in his UFC debut at UFC 257 in January. He is a former three-time Bellator lightweight champion.
