Former five-star quarterback Sam Huard, the top-ranked quarterback in the class of 2021, is transferring to Utah from FCS Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

Huard spent last season as the starter at Cal Poly, where he transferred after spending two seasons in a backup role at Washington, where his father, Damon, and uncle, Brock, also played quarterback.

In his lone season at Cal Poly, Huard completed 185 of 304 passes for 2,205 yards with 18 touchdowns and 10 interceptions as the Mustangs went 3-8. The team’s offensive coordinator was Huard’s high school coach, Sheldon Cross, who was announced as the offensive coordinator at FCS Stetson on April 26.

Huard will compete with Brandon Rose and Isaac Wilson to back up Utah quarterback Cam Rising, who missed the entire 2023 season with a serious knee injury after leading the Utes to back-to-back Pac-12 titles in 2021 and 2022. Utah joins the Big 12 this season.
