Sergio Perez, like Fernando Alonso and his Aston Martin, brought out a red flag in third practice after a late crash into the barriers.

The Red Bull driver was then knocked out in the second part of qualifying, failing to challenge for pole alongside team-mate Max Verstappen

Perez told Sky Sports: “We’ve been playing up and down with the car a lot and unfortunately, going into qualifying with the small margins, Q1 started quite badly – I had a poor lap – but in the end it turned out that we were safe, which meant we started Q2 with the soft tyre.

“Once we put the new tyre on for the second run, I surprisingly picked up a lot of rear grip and I got caught out with it.

“I think we’ve made some good progress with the car – like Max showed it – but unfortunately, from my side, I didn’t get a chance to show this in Q3.”
