Woodley, Covington make weight for UFC event

MMA

LAS VEGAS — The wait for Tyron Woodley vs. Colby Covington is nearly over.

Woodley (19-5-1) and Covington (15-2) both successfully made weight on Friday for their highly anticipated welterweight bout at UFC Fight Night on Saturday. Each fighter weighed in at the maximum 171-pound limit. The fight will headline the event, which takes place at the promotion’s Apex facility and airs on ESPN+.

This matchup has been years in the making. Woodley and Covington are former teammates at American Top Team in Coconut Creek, Florida, but have never gotten along. Covington recently changed camps to MMA Masters in Miami.

Woodley, 38, is looking to snap a two-fight skid. The former welterweight champion lost his belt to Kamaru Usman in 2019 and suffered a decision loss to No. 1 contender Gilbert Burns in May. Covington is coming off a failed title bid against Usman in December.
